Sunday 30th July - Farm Open Day - Horton House Farm, Wiltshire

Last July on a Sunday we invited our customers and supporters down to the farm for the day.

For me personally, this was the embodiment of what I envisioned when I set up The Green Butcher nearly 3 years ago; bringing you to the farm, meeting the farmers and seeing up close where your food comes from.

It is also genuinely quite moving to see and feel the simple beauty of a farm working in harmony with nature.

The day starts at around 10am and Horton House (Devizes) is a 1hr 45 drive from Twickenham. After tea, coffee and cake on arrival we take a walk out around the lower pastures of the farm learning about pasture based farming and seeing the dairy herds of cows, goats, pigs and emus!

I will prepare a big BBQ lunch in the garden and then the family lay on tractor trailer rides up onto the chalk downs above the farm where the sheep and cattle graze and where biodiversity is in full bloom with wild flowers and rare species of butterfly now returning to the landscape. We walk across the Wans Dyke and back down the hill before picking up the trailer back to the farm.

We wrap things up around 4:30pm. This year we are simply asking for a £10 donation per person to cover the cost of lunch.
