18th April 2023 - Defining Grass Fed
When we think about “grass fed” meat and dairy, we probably all have a similar picture in our minds; The British countryside, animals out grazing grass, a natural process at work.
But how do we define grass fed? For farmers, retailers and consumers, this is a very current and relevant question.
Because grass fed is such a hot trend, it's expected that everyone selling red meat wants to be associated with the term. The UK government defines grass fed as beef or lamb from animals that have been “partially grass fed” (51% to be precise). In reality, because there is no monitoring of production standards and no checks at the point of retail, the grass fed label is open to abuse and therefore largely meaningless.
The promise we can make at The Green Butcher is that we are a Certified 100% Pasture Fed For Life and Organic Butchery, working exclusively with British Farms also certified Pasture For Life and Organic.
We say that the two together make up the gold standard.
